Hi!! Wow, have I missed this! I took a slightly unexpected 2 year hiatus from blogging while we were in major transition time. Back in June of 2021, we packed up all of our belongings, crammed them into a 20 foot trailer and made the more than 5,000 mile trek across country to start a new life. Or maybe that’s an old fashioned way of describing a major move? I don’t know, but it certainly feels like it was a new start!

We sold our house in Maine and my husband sold his whole lobstering business, leaving nothing behind. We said our goodbyes and left our little island in the rearview mirror. Then, we made the long trek across country, through Canada, into Alaska, trading ocean and lobsters for endless mountains, bears and moose. We purchased a small plot of land in an area with only a few people, sight unseen. We set up camp and started the process of clearing land and building a house. Thankfully my husband is incredibly handy! It was an all hands on deck process, and a race against time and weather. I won’t give you all the nitty, gritty details.

We’re settling into our new lives, learning a whole new process. Learning to deal with 40-50 below zero temperatures, hauling water instead of getting it out of a well, endless summer days (literally, it doesn’t get dark for 2-3 months of the year), and the long darkness of the winter (we get about 5 1/2 hours of daylight on the shortest day of the year). Also, we grocery shop in Anchorage, which is about 4 plus hours away since anything local is incredibly expensive. We’re finding our new groove. I am no longer a stay at home mom, I am working at my kiddos school as an administrative assistant and my husband has started a carpentry business.

So, with a long story long, I am finally feeling like I have the energy to put into blogging. I have a few recipes that I created and photographed before we left in 2021, so I will be sharing those first. Things will be, maybe, a little different since I’ll be working with moose and caribou meat and the fresh veggies/fruit are not as easily accessible or diverse. Here’s to a new era of blogging!

hey Lydia, hi from Sunshine! I love that you posted an update, I’ve been wondering how you guys are doing. Your pictures are beautiful! Alaska sounds like quite a place. Do you have a shot of your finished house? How are the kids doing? Hope you have a great summer, we’re just about finished with school here!
Hi Sarah! We’re doing fantastic! I don’t have a shot of the house finished because it’s still a work in progress. We are living in it, but we still have a lot to do. Kids are great, settling in and making some great friends. I hope you all are doing well! <3
Glad to see you are settled in. Beautiful scenery!
